The Worst of the Worst: Big Brother 9’s Joshuah Receives a Full Hall of Shame Inductionby David Bloomberg -- 04/28/2008
Most viewers believe this bunch of Big Brother players is among the worst the show has seen. But Joshuah was the worst of the bunch, with his vile behavior getting so bad that CBS didn’t even air most of it. His verbal attacks were made only worse by his hypocrisy and claims that he’s really a nice guy. The Joshuah we saw certainly was not a nice guy – in fact, he was shameful.
Big Brother 9’s Joshuah has already received a Hall of Shame Moment for his behavior (along with Chelsea) in bringing up Amanda’s father’s suicide as a way of attacking her in the game. But Josh’s behavior went so far above and beyond (or should we say below and beyond) that it was decided he needs a full induction here in the Reality TV Hall of Shame.
It appears that Josh was trying to be, in his words, “The Gay Evel Dick.” Well, he certainly didn’t win, so he failed in that regard. That means the only part of Dick that he was able to emulate was the vile behavior that got Dick himself inducted into the Hall of Shame despite winning.
In Big Brother, it’s not uncommon for blow-ups to occur. Being locked in a house with the same few people for months on end can certainly wear on anybody, and emotional outbursts are likely to happen. But that’s not what we’re talking about with Josh. Instead, he often purposely preplanned his attacks, searching for just the right personal notes to hit. And with Josh, there was no such thing as too personal, as we saw in the situation with Amanda.
In one example, on March 18, Josh talked to James and planned out how he would attack Natalie’s apparently-schizophrenic mother and Sheila’s son (even though he had promised Sheila he would never bring up her son). In fact, he specifically said he wanted to mention Sheila’s son riding the “short bus” and then went on about how he was going to make the two girls cry. RealityNewsOnline’s recapper, William Hammon, even noted he was almost giddy about it! William added, “He can’t wait to see the damage he inflicts... He wants to hit them full force when they can’t defend themselves. … He then decides that he’ll give them an ultimatum: throw the HOH competition or have him humiliate them and their families on live television.”
Bizarrely, at one point in this little planning session, he even said that after making the women cry, his parents would be proud of him. Yet as we saw when the show interviewed his mother, that wasn’t at all the case – his behavior was even embarrassing to his own mother!
On March 19, Josh moved forward with his attacking, calling Sheila by a variety of names we don’t want to repeat here, verbally attacking her son, and threatening to rip out her hair. Even after Matt tried to get him to calm down and not play the game this way, Josh refused.
But those were not even the worst of Josh’s misdeeds. Looking back to March 9, we saw how he attacked Natalie when Ryan put James on the block instead of Matt, as Joshuah’s alliance had egotistically believed would happen. Of course, Josh couldn’t go after Ryan, since Ryan’s a man – he had to attack a woman instead (more on that later).
He began by mouthing off about Natalie’s “crazy” mother. Then he, along with James, dumped pickle juice and water on her. They (and the producers) apparently decided that was okay because Dick had dumped tea on Jen last season. So two wrongs make a right.
Afterwards, he and Chelsia congratulated themselves over their actions, but Josh wasn’t done. He wanted to get a ketchup bottle to make his own version of a bloody ketchup abortion on Natalie’s bed. Finally, Big Brother put a stop to his behavior before he could do this.
He then told his pals that he was going to make Natalie’s life a living hell. If everybody thought his behavior towards Amanda and Allison (whom he had screamed at about having a “horse” face, etc.) was bad, just wait to see what he’d do to Natalie.
In the midst of all this, Matt told Josh that his mother was probably ashamed of him, but Josh said his mother was proud of him. As we all know, Matt was the one who was right.
By the way, if you only watched the show and didn’t watch or read about the live feeds, you missed most of this. Funny how the worst of Josh’s behavior wasn’t shown on TV – so most people don’t even know how shameful his behavior truly was.
But even if Big Brother didn’t show all of his behavior, they did at least stop some of it. Not only did they prevent the ketchup incident, but they also called him into the diary room at other times when his behavior got out of hand, and they even gave him a five-foot restraining order (as in, he needed to stay five feet away from the target of his latest attacks) several times in the game because of his threats!
This article only documents a few of his worst sins. But of course, Josh never saw himself as a sinner, but a saint. We saw him praying on multiple occasions, but never exactly living up to what most people would think of as a good Christian – more like a big hypocrite. At one point, he even told Chelsia that all this attacking of other people is actually difficult for him, as he is such a nice guy outside the house. Funny, it didn’t seem difficult – it seemed joyful.
Then, in his going-away speech, he said he was proud of being true to himself in the house. This begs the question of what he was proud of, exactly. He earlier had said he wasn’t like this; now he says he was true to himself – which is it? And was he really proud of how he behaved? How could he be?
To top it off, he told Julie he is a good person and, “I’m only mean when I’m provoked.” This is pure BS. We saw that he, in fact, planned some of his worst behavior. And his attacks on Amanda? He wasn’t provoked – he wasn’t even involved until he put himself in that position!
Ryan hit the nail on the head in saying Josh’s final speech was a complete personality change, because he showed no dignity while he was still in the house. Unfortunately, it was only a temporary change, as he continued to rip on Natalie while in the jury house (before she got there) for no good reason – and certainly no game reason.
I mentioned earlier that Josh attacked Natalie instead of Ryan even though Ryan had been the one to put James on the block, and indicated that’s because Ryan is a man. If we take a look at who Josh went after in the house, we see a list focusing on Amanda, Sheila, Allison, and Natalie. Hmmm. All women. What a coincidence.
Josh, on March 19, told Matt he didn’t go after guys because they didn’t mess with him or talk behind his back. Really? On Big Brother, guys didn’t talk behind somebody else’s back? Baloney. And I bet Ryan was involved in some discussions behind his back given that he promised to nominate Matt and instead nominated James.
Sheila even flat-out said Josh wouldn’t go after another man because he’s afraid that guy will beat him up. And many who saw his behavior on the live feeds agreed.
So not only did Josh behave in a vile manner, but he was also a coward and a bully, only attacking those he thought he could push around. He did so in the worst possible way, bringing up personal and family issues – even when he has specifically promised not to do so. At the same time, he acted like he was one of the good guys, which he most certainly was not.
And I just need to add one thing from the finale – Josh telling Adam to speak to him with respect during the jury questioning? What a hypocrite. And what a jerk. And a bunch of other names I can’t call him on this website. It really topped off everything nicely.
For all of these reasons, Joshuah most definitely deserves this full induction into the Reality TV Hall of Shame.
